S355M Steel Grade, Mechanical Properties, Chemical Composition, Grade Equivalent

Standard: EN 10025-4:2004, European standard for hot-rolled structural steel. Part 4 - Technical delivery conditions for thermomechanical rolled weldable fine grain structural steels. Steels specified in this standard are intended for use in heavily loaded parts of welded structures such as, bridges, flood gates, storage tanks, water supply tanks, etc., for service at ambient and low temperatures.

Steel grade: S355M ;

Number: 1.8823 .

Welding: The fine-grain structural steel grades of this series can be perfectly welded both manually and using automatic equipment by means of all known welding processes, not least due to their reduced carbon content and the low carbon equivalent value.

Notch impact test. Average values of 3 samples. One individual value may fall short of the required minimum value by not more than 30 %. The sample width shall equal the product thickness if the latter is between 6 - 10 mm, the tests being performed using samples which are similar to Charpy-V samples. The values specified in the table below are to be reduced proportionally to the sample width.

Ladle analysis.
A sulphur content S of max. 0.010% can be arranged for all products, if agreed upon ordering (e.g. for railways).
If sufficient nitrogen binding elements are present, the minimum aluminium requirement does not apply.
Cu content of more than 0.04% can cause hot shortness during hot forming.
Maximum carbon equivalent value CEV = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Cu+Ni)/15; of EN 10025-2:2004 concerning special requirements for S275 and S355. When the steel is suitable for hot dip galvanizing, CEV is raised by 0.2%.
Upon agreement: Si = 0,14-0,25% and P ≤ 0,035% max. for capability of forming a zinc layer during hot-dip galvanisation (class 3).
